Build your home's security in layers

Good home security is not one gadget. It is a few honest layers that each make a burglar's job slower, louder and less certain, until the house next door looks easier. Nothing here needs Wi-Fi, an app, or a monthly contract. You buy it once and it works.

Layer 1: Deter from the street

Cameras, signs, lights and occupancy tricks end most break-ins before they are attempted.

Layer 2: Harden the entry points

Window locks and film and door reinforcement make the two ways in physically resist.

Layer 3: Sound the alarm

The TremShield vibration alarm fires 125dB the instant a window is struck, before entry, and personal and travel alarms cover you beyond the front door.

Layer 4: Protect what is inside

Locked and fireproof storage means even a worst-case ten minutes costs you almost nothing.

A first weekend that covers most of it

You do not need everything at once. One calm Saturday gets you most of the way: put the vibration alarm on the most reachable ground-floor window, fit the strike plate kit on the main door, set a bar in the patio slider track, and plug in one occupancy signal for the evenings you are out. That is four small jobs, three of them with no drilling, and the house already reads differently from the sidewalk. Renters can do nearly all of it; the renter-friendly security guide keeps every deposit intact.

Then let it run

This gear has no subscription to lapse and no server to go down, so upkeep is a battery check twice a year. Before you travel, walk through the pre-trip security checklist so the house looks lived-in while you are gone.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start with home security?
Ground floor, in this order: an alarm on the most reachable window, reinforcement on the main door, and one occupancy signal for when you are out. That trio covers most real-world break-ins.
Why no Wi-Fi or apps?
Because security that depends on your router, a server and a subscription has three extra ways to fail. Self-contained devices arm in seconds, work in a blackout, and never bill you again.
Is this gear renter-friendly?
Almost all of it: adhesive, tension or freestanding installs that come off clean. The few items that need screws say so clearly on their product page.
Will this really stop a determined burglar?
No single thing will, which is why layers matter. Most burglars are opportunists on a clock: when the window screams, the door holds and the valuables are locked away, they leave. That is the outcome you are buying.
